We know someone is going to die on tonight’s Vampire Diaries midseason finale (The CW, 8 p.m. ET), not that Candice Accola, who plays Caroline, will confirm it. “Well, it is a Christmas episode, and we do film the show in Georgia, and I will say that we did have fake snow, so there could be a horrific murder of Frosty the Snowman, who just couldn’t keep it together under the unusually warm weather in Georgia. I leaked it. You heard it here first!” she says, dodging a question about how many tissues we’ll need. But here’s what she will say about the hour, which finds Caroline and Stefan disagreeing with Tyler’s plan to take down Klaus:

• “Obviously the writers are gonna write an episode that will keep the audience questioning and being really excited to see what happens next when we come back [Jan. 17]. So sure, there is going to be a cliffhanger of sorts,” she says. “But what I think is more interesting about this episode is that there’s some big conversations being had between different sets of characters. There’s gonna be repercussions to discussions had in this episode.” (While we’re left considering what those repercussions might be, here’s what she’ll be doing over the hiatus: ”My secret shame is that I just watched the whole two seasons of Homeland, essentially, in less than a week. That’s a lot of hours to dedicate to a show in one week,” she says. “Now I need to catch up on Breaking Bad, because I think I was just starting the third season. That will probably be my holiday show… Nothing says Christmas like a meth show.”

• “Throughout the episode, everyone feels that what they’re doing is right. Anyone who has an objective and on a mission, they very much feel that their perspective is the right perspective. Obviously, that is going to create conflict,” she says. “As far as Tyler and Caroline having budding conflict, it’s just that she’s really worried about him, and they’re not agreeing, and they both feel that they know what’s best for the situation right now, so there’s not really a lot of discussions happening [between them], it’s a lot more action-based.”

• “I was really surprised by a moment that happens in this episode that will probably just pass by everyone else, just because it’s not a big action moment,” she says, regarding Caroline’s interaction with Klaus. “It’s just the way that they converse with each other in this episode is definitely a reflection of what we saw last week — it’s more open, it’s more personal. I just feel like the writers have been really wonderfully opening up this — it’s not a friendship, and it’s not any sort of trusting potential relationship, at this point, for Caroline at least. But their dialogue and the way that they talk to one another has so much more humanity now. We’ll see a little bit more of that this week.”
